The Tale of the Flopsy Bunnies
by Beatrix Potter (1909)
The garden was warm and sunny, and six little bunnies, known as the Flopsy Bunnies, were hopping about with twitchy noses and fluffy tails. They were very hungry and on a grand adventure to find something tasty to nibble on. Their parents had taught them not to wander too far, but today, curiosity got the better of them.

“Let’s check behind Mr. McGregor’s compost pile!” whispered the bravest of the bunnies. The others giggled and followed, their tiny paws pattering softly on the ground. Now, Mr. McGregor was known for his vegetables and, of course, his grumpiness. He didn’t much care for rabbits in his garden, but the Flopsy Bunnies didn’t worry about that today. They were too excited.

Behind the pile, they found a feast! Lettuce leaves, carrot tops, and even squishy old radishes—all forgotten and tossed away. The bunnies couldn’t believe their luck. They nibbled and munched until their tummies were round and full. Feeling wonderfully sleepy after their meal, the Flopsy Bunnies yawned and dozed off in the shade of the compost heap, their little ears flopping over their eyes like blankets.

But trouble was nearby. Mr. McGregor came stomping into the garden with a wheelbarrow, grumbling to himself. His sharp eyes fell on the snoozing bunnies, and his bushy eyebrows shot up. “Hmph! Lazy little scamps!” he muttered. Mr. McGregor had an idea. He grabbed an old sack and tiptoed toward the sleeping bunnies. One by one, he carefully scooped them up and popped them into the sack. It was a very gentle kind of mischief—no bunny woke up!

With a huff, Mr. McGregor tied the sack closed and plopped it into his wheelbarrow. He planned to take the bunnies far, far away so they wouldn’t bother his garden again. But Mr. McGregor didn’t know that someone else had been watching. As he wheeled the sack across the garden, a clever little robin swooped down and pecked at the sack’s knot.

The knot unraveled! The Flopsy Bunnies, still a bit sleepy, peeked out of the sack. They didn’t know exactly what was happening, but they knew it was time to hop away quick as lightning! Out they tumbled, fluffy tails bouncing as they darted toward the bushes. By the time Mr. McGregor noticed, the sack was empty, and the bunnies were long gone.

The Flopsy Bunnies raced home, their hearts thumping with excitement and a little bit of nervousness. “Maybe we won’t go back to Mr. McGregor’s garden for a while,” one of them suggested, and the others nodded. For now, they were happy to be safe and sound, snuggled up together under the warm evening sky.

And so, the Flopsy Bunnies learned that while adventures are fun, sometimes it’s best to stay where it’s safe—or at least keep an eye open, just in case someone grumpy shows up!
