Once upon a time, there was a kind woman who wished for a child more than anything in the world. One day, a fairy granted her wish by giving her a tiny seed. When the woman planted it, a beautiful flower bloomed, and inside was a little girl no bigger than her thumb. The woman named her Thumbelina, and she was as sweet as a sunny day.
Thumbelina loved her flower home, but she was very curious about the world. One night, while she was sleeping snugly in a walnut shell bed, a big, bumbling toad hopped in through the window. “What a perfect bride for my son!” he croaked and plopped Thumbelina into his lily pad boat, paddling away to his swamp.
Poor Thumbelina woke up surrounded by slimy mud and croaking frogs. The toad introduced her to his son, who was a bit of a grump and didn’t even say hello. Thumbelina didn’t want to live in the swamp, so she asked a friendly fish nearby for help. The fish nibbled through the lily pad stem, setting Thumbelina free. Off she floated down the stream, waving goodbye to the fish, while a curious butterfly came along to keep her company.
Just as Thumbelina was starting to enjoy the ride, a giant beetle swooped down and carried her off to his tree. The beetle and his friends weren’t very kind. They laughed at Thumbelina for being small and different, and before long, they left her all alone. Poor Thumbelina didn’t know what to do, but she was brave and decided to press on through the forest, hoping to find a cozy place to live.
As the seasons changed, Thumbelina faced chilly winds and falling snow. Luckily, she found shelter in the home of a field mouse who was kind enough to share her food and warmth. The mouse introduced Thumbelina to a rich and rather serious mole who lived nearby. The mole admired Thumbelina and wanted her to marry him, but he didn’t like the sunshine or birds—things Thumbelina loved the most.
One day, while walking through one of the mole’s tunnels, Thumbelina found a swallow lying injured on the ground. She felt sorry for the poor bird and cared for him until he was strong enough to fly again. The swallow thanked Thumbelina for saving his life and promised he wouldn’t forget her kindness.
Spring arrived, and Thumbelina decided she couldn’t marry the mole and live underground forever. She longed for freedom and sunshine. Just as she was about to lose hope, the swallow returned! He invited her to climb onto his back, and together they soared through the skies to a land full of flowers.
In this magical place, Thumbelina met tiny people just like her. Among them was a handsome prince who wore a crown made of sparkling petals. They quickly became friends, and the prince asked Thumbelina to stay and be his queen. Thumbelina finally felt at home, surrounded by beauty and kindness.
From that day on, Thumbelina lived happily among the flowers, and her heart was as big as her small self. Sometimes, even the smallest person can have the biggest adventures!
