Once upon a time, in a cozy little farmyard, there lived a donkey who was feeling very glum. "I’ve worked so hard for so long," he said with a sigh, "but now I’m getting too old, and the farmer says he doesn’t need me anymore." So, the donkey decided to pack his things (which wasn’t much—just a cheerful tune in his head) and head off to Bremen to become a musician. "Why not? Life could use a little more singing," he thought. And off he trotted with a spring in his step.
On his way, the donkey heard a sad and scratchy voice from a yard. It was a dog, lying under a tree and looking just as glum. "What’s the matter?" asked the donkey. "Oh," said the dog, "I used to be the fastest runner, but now I’m not. The farmer doesn’t want me anymore." The donkey tilted his head. "Well, I’m off to Bremen to be a musician. Why don’t you join me? Everyone can use a good drummer!" The dog wagged his tail, feeling much better, and together they marched along the road.
Soon, they came across a cat sitting on a fence, looking as if she’d lost her favorite ball of yarn. "Why the long face?" asked the dog. "I used to chase mice all day," the cat replied, "but now I just like naps and purring, and nobody wants me around." "Perfect!" said the donkey. "You can be part of our band. Every musician needs a singer." The cat purred at the idea and hopped down to join them.
As the trio continued, they heard a loud "Cock-a-doodle-doo!"—but it sounded more like "cock-a-doodle-boo-hoo." There, perched on a gate, was a rooster with droopy feathers. "What’s wrong?" asked the cat. "I used to wake everyone up," said the rooster, "but now they don’t even need me for that. They say alarm clocks are better." "Nonsense!" said the donkey. "Your voice is just what our band needs. Come to Bremen with us!" The rooster flapped his wings, feeling proud again, and joined the merry march.
After walking for hours, the four friends grew tired and hungry. They stumbled upon a little cottage hidden in the woods. "Maybe someone inside can share some food," said the dog. But when they peeked through the window, they saw a group of thieves counting gold and feasting. "Those bad guys shouldn’t keep all that to themselves," whispered the cat. The animals huddled together and came up with a plan.
The donkey stood tall with the dog on his back, the cat perched on the dog, and the rooster on top of the cat. Then, on the count of three, they let loose their best musical performance: "Hee-haw! Woof-woof! Meow! Cock-a-doodle-doo!" It was such a ruckus that the thieves jumped out of their chairs and ran off into the forest, thinking ghosts had come to get them.
The animals laughed and cheered as they climbed into the cozy cottage. They ate the thieves’ leftover food, stretched out by the fire, and decided they didn’t need to go to Bremen after all. "This place is perfect for us," said the rooster. The donkey nodded. "Who needs a stage when you’ve got good friends?"
So, the four musicians stayed in the little cottage, living happily ever after and making music whenever they pleased. And whenever someone passed by and heard their joyful tunes, they couldn’t help but smile.
Sometimes, the best adventures lead us right where we’re meant to be.
