The Emperor's New Clothes
by Hans Christian Andersen (1837)
Once upon a time, there was an emperor who loved fancy clothes more than anything else in the world. His wardrobe was so full of silks, sparkles, and shiny buttons that he needed a new room just to fit them all! But still, he wanted more. One day, two clever tricksters came to town with a plan. They called themselves tailors, and they promised to make the emperor the most amazing outfit ever—a magical one!

"This outfit will be so special that only very smart people can see it," they said with big smiles. The emperor was thrilled! "I must have it!" he exclaimed. So, he gave the tailors a bag of gold and told them to start right away.

The tailors pretended to work hard, snipping invisible scissors and sewing with imaginary thread. They laughed behind closed doors, knowing they had tricked the emperor. "This is too easy," they whispered. When the emperor came to check on his new clothes, the tailors held up their hands as if showing him something. "What do you think?" they asked.

The emperor squinted but saw... nothing at all! Of course, he didn’t want to seem silly, so he nodded quickly and said, "It’s magnificent!" His advisors, who didn’t see anything either, also smiled and agreed, "Absolutely stunning!"

Finally, the outfit was "ready," and the emperor decided to wear it for a big parade. The tailors pretended to dress him, carefully pulling on sleeves and tying imaginary ribbons. "You look amazing," they said. The emperor glanced in the mirror and saw—well, only himself! But he thought to himself, "If I can’t see it, maybe I’m not as smart as I thought. Better not admit that!"

So, out he went, stepping proudly into the streets wearing his "magic clothes." The crowd stared wide-eyed. They couldn’t see anything either, but no one wanted to say so. They clapped and cheered, pretending the emperor looked incredible. "What beautiful clothes!" they shouted.

Then, a small child tugged on her mom’s sleeve and pointed at the emperor. "Mommy, why isn’t he wearing any clothes?" she asked loudly. The crowd went quiet, and people began to look at each other. "Wait a minute," someone whispered. "She’s right! He’s not wearing anything!" Soon, laughter bubbled through the crowd like lemonade fizz.

The emperor stopped in his tracks, his face turning as red as a tomato. He realized the truth—there were no magic clothes! But instead of getting angry, he chuckled nervously and said, "Well, it’s a very breezy outfit!" The crowd laughed even harder, and the emperor hurried back to his palace.

From that day on, the emperor learned an important lesson: it’s better to be honest than to worry about looking smart. And he never trusted tricksters again.
