The Fisherman and His Wife
A fisherman catches a magic fish who grants wishes, but he and his wife learn to be happy with what they already have.
One sunny morning, a nice fisherman dropped his line into the bright blue sea. All of a sudden, a little fish with shiny scales peeked out and said, “Please let me go! If you put me back, I’ll do something special for you.” The fisherman smiled and gently let the fish swim away.
That night, he told his wife about the talking fish. She said, “I wish we had a bigger, happier house!” The fisherman hurried down to the water and called, “Magic fish, my wife has a wish!” The fish popped up and listened. “Go home,” the fish said. “Your wish has come true.”
When the fisherman and his wife went home, they saw a big, bright house! The wife danced around, so happy. But a few days later, she had another wish. “Can we have a house with towers?” she asked. The fisherman went to see the fish again. Splash! The fish made the wish come true, and now their house had towers with lots of windows.
Soon the wife wanted even more. “What if I could be a queen?” she asked, laughing. The fisherman called on the fish again. This time, the fish nodded and waved its fin. Back home, the wife now had a golden hat and a soft chair to sit on. She felt very special!
But after a while, the wife wished for something too big. “I want to be as bright as the sun!” The fisherman worried, but he went to talk to the fish one last time. The kind fish popped up, made a swirl in the water, and said softly, “Go home.”
This time, the fisherman and his wife found their small, cozy house again, just as before. The wife looked around, hugged her husband, and laughed. She knew she was lucky and loved, and that was the best wish of all.
Being happy together is the greatest treasure you can have.
