Bravery Kindness
Jack lived with his mother, and they were cheerful even when their cupboards were almost empty. One sunny day, Jack’s mom said, “Let’s trade our old cow for something that can help us.”

On his way to the market, Jack met a smiling stranger. “Trade your cow for these beans!” said the stranger, holding out shiny, bright beans that sparkled in the sun. Jack grinned and made the trade, hoping his mom would be proud. When he got home, his mom was surprised and a little sad. “No food?” she sighed, and tossed the beans out the window. That night, their tummies rumbled as they slept.

In the morning, Jack couldn’t believe his eyes. Outside, a giant green beanstalk grew all the way up to the sky! “Mom, look!” Jack said. The beanstalk looked just like a twisty, leafy ladder. Jack decided to climb it, one step at a time, until he reached the clouds.

At the very top, Jack found a castle bigger than anything he’d ever seen. He peeked inside and saw tables as tall as doorways, spoons as big as shovels, and a barrel full of colorful jellybeans! Suddenly, Jack heard big, heavy footsteps. A huge Giant with kind eyes walked in, singing, “Who’s ready to play?” The Giant yawned, put on his soft slippers, and soon nodded off, snoring gently.

Jack saw a golden hen in a small cage. The hen chirped, “Help me!” Jack opened the door, and the hen hopped onto his arm, giving a happy cluck. Next, he spotted a little golden harp that played soft, gentle songs. The harp winked, “Let’s go home!”

Jack carefully carried the hen and harp outside. As he started down the beanstalk, the Giant woke up and waved. “Don’t forget your snack!” he called, tossing Jack a giant blueberry muffin. Jack giggled, thanked the Giant, and hurried down to his mom.

Jack’s mother was so happy to see him back safe and sound. The magic hen laid golden eggs, and the harp played beautiful music every night. From that day, Jack and his mom always had plenty to eat—and shared lots of smiles and songs.

When you try something new and show a little kindness, you just might find something wonderful.
