In a sunlit field, all the animals liked to brag, but no one bragged more than Harry the Hare. He zoomed past with a flash of fur, calling out, “Nobody can run as fast as me!” His long ears flopped behind him as he zipped around, making everyone giggle.

But on this bright morning, Tilly the Tortoise munched her breakfast slowly and smiled. “Speed isn’t everything, Harry,” she called gently. Harry laughed, thumping his big toes. “Oh, Tilly, you’re so slow! I could nap, wake up, and still beat you in a race!” The other animals gathered, tails wiggling and feathers flapping, all excited to see what would happen next.

Tilly tilted her head. “Let’s have a race. From the big oak tree to the pond.” Harry bounced in delight. “This will be easy-peasy!” he said. The fox counted, “Ready, set, GO!”

Harry dashed away so quickly he left a cloud of dust. Tilly just smiled and started her journey. Step by step, she plodded along, humming a happy tune. Rabbits peeked out from the bushes, cheering for Harry, but he was so far ahead, he spun in silly circles, waving his ears. “Maybe I’ll stop for a snack,” he said, munching a carrot. Tilly kept walking and humming, not stopping for anything.

Harry looked back and saw Tilly far, far behind. “I have plenty of time for a nap,” he yawned. Curling up under a shady bush, he fell asleep, dreaming of being the champion. Tilly, meanwhile, moved steadily, never rushing or stopping, even though the sun grew warm and butterflies fluttered near her nose. Step by step, she passed sleeping Harry.

The birds started to chirp. “Tilly is almost at the finish line!” the sparrow cried. The animals cheered, their voices tumbling over each other. Harry woke up with a start, rubbing his eyes. He saw Tilly almost at the pond! “Wait for me!” he shouted, leaping up and zooming forward. But it was too late. With one last slow, steady step, Tilly touched the big rock by the pond—and won!

All the animals cheered. Harry arrived, panting and amazed. “How did you do it, Tilly?” he asked. Tilly looked up with a gentle grin. “I just kept going!”

Everyone learned that day that slow and steady wins the race, and even little steps can lead to big victories.
