The Wind and the Sun compete to see who can make a boy remove his jacket, learning that kindness wins over force.
Who do you think is stronger—the playful Wind or the gentle Sun? One cool, blustery day, the Wind and the Sun spotted a little boy walking along a country lane. The boy had on a cozy red jacket, buttoned up tight. The Wind puffed up his cheeks and said, “I bet I can make that boy take his jacket off faster than you can!” The Sun beamed and winked, “Let’s see who’s right.”
The Wind whistled and whooshed. He spun around the trees, swooping down with a wild rush. “Hang on to your hat!” he called, zipping past the boy. The little boy shivered when the chilly Wind blew. He held his jacket tighter and zipped it all the way up to his chin. “Brrr!” said the boy, walking even faster to keep warm. The Wind huffed, puffed, and howled like a big puppy playing in the yard. But no matter how wildly he blew, the jacket stayed put.
Now it was the Sun’s turn. He peeked from behind a fluffy white cloud and stretched his golden arms. “Hello down there!” he called, warming the world with his sunny smile. The Sun’s gentle rays tickled the boy’s nose and made the flowers lift their heads. Little by little, the air turned warm and sparkly. The boy felt cozy and unzipped his jacket. Then, with a happy sigh, he slipped it off and skipped along the path, swinging it in his hand.
The Wind stopped blowing and watched. “Wow, you didn’t even yell or rush. You just made the world feel nice,” said the Wind, a bit amazed. The Sun glowed even brighter. “Sometimes, a gentle touch can do more than lots of bluster,” said the Sun.
So the Wind and the Sun became good friends and learned that kindness and warmth could change the world, one sunny day at a time.
